The fight against tuberculosis of wisents from Bieszczady

Abstract

In year 2010 in Bieszczady within area administrated by Forest Inspectorate Stuposiany the dead European bison cow was found. Necropsy and microbiological investigation shows the reason of death was tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis. During years 2011 and 2012, another dead bison were found. It was crucial, that for health protection of whole bison population in Bieszczady, all animals from the infected herd in Forest Inspectorate Stuposiany and National Park of Bieszczady should be eliminated. In period between December 12th, 2012 and March 7th, 2013, 20 individuals were eliminated and there were found remains of four bison. In all biological material from these cases Mycobacterium bovis was found
