Abstract

The prevalence of antibodies to Neospora caninum was examined in European bison (Bison bonasus bonasus L.) eliminated or immobilized at Białowieża, Poland in 2012–2013. Sera from 32 European bison, of different ages and sexes, were tested for N. caninum antibodies using an ELISA test. Positive antibody responses were found in 9 bison (a prevalence of 28,1%). Our results
confirm and indicate the growing presence of N. caninum in the European bison living in Białowieża. Additionally, the negative impact of this protozoan parasite on the bison reproductive process is discussed using the example of the cow Porwanka.
